About the Artist

Artist James J. is a middle school student who lives in Indianapolis.

His love for art was evident at age three. His mom said, “Before we could get him to write words, he was drawing.”

At the end of kindergarten, shortly after he turned six, he displayed his art in an art show at his school. He drew an enlarged praying mantis. He entered art in the same show two years later in second grade, and he drew a monster bursting out of the sidewalk.

At age seven he published his first book Ghost Text. This book is about best friends Jared, Curtis, and Nick who have to defeat a ghost that initially contacts them through text messages.

In sixth grade, he was chosen by the student body as best artist.

At age 12, James J. made his illustrator debut for the book Reflective Haiku: Poems for Growing, Healing, and Restoring the Soul. It was his first opportunity to shift from solely drawing on paper to drawing digitally.

At age 13, he received another opportunity where he created three t-shirt designs for the Indy Winter Farmers Market. After a few months of voting, the winning design was chosen and can be purchased online.

In addition to art, James serves as a youth teaching assistant alongside his identical twin brother, Jerry, for Blazing Brilliance where they have assisted during the 2023 Blooming Verses: Planting Poetic Seeds Youth Summer Poetry Workshop and the 2024 Glow and Grow Camp. They also serve as STEM mentors for The STEM Connection‘s summer camps and have created videos for TSC’s STEM Quick Wins series.

Last, they are part of the Seesaw Stars program where they memorize scripts to teach students reading and math lessons.

When he is not drawing, he enjoys creating people and objects using clay with his brother Jerry, playing his trombone, cooking, and playing video games.
